E-bike rental scheme trial

E-bike rental scheme overview

A new trial of dockless electric bikes (e-bikes) is being rolled out across the borough, in partnership with the operator Lime. This follows approval to go ahead by the Council’s Cabinet in April 2023. The scheme will introduce up to 300 dedicated e-bike bays across the borough from which residents and visitors can hire the bikes. This will help to achieve the council’s transport, public health, air quality and climate emergency objectives.

The use of e-bikes has greatly increased in recent years, but a more formalised scheme is needed to help minimise instances of bikes being left in an obstructive manner. Once the scheme is in place, e-bikes will only be permitted to be parked in the e-bike bays. The bays will predominantly be located in existing carriageway parking bays with a smaller number of footway bays provided where it is suitable to do so. This scheme is intended to ensure the council has greater control over where bikes are parked and therefore reduce the impact on other highways users. The trial will run for six months from completion of the scheme, with a potential six month extension if necessary.

The scheme is being delivered in three phases:

  • Phase 1: launched in Brentford and Chiswick on 5 June 2023.
  • Phase 2: launched in Isleworth, Hounslow and Osterley areas on 10 July 2023.
  • Phase 3: the final stage will extend the scheme to the Bedfont, Cranford, Feltham, Hanworth and Heston areas by early September 2023.

The trial will run for six months from completion of the scheme with a potential six month extension if necessary.

Further information about the scheme can be found in the FAQs section and we have also published the e-bike bay locations.
