Overview
School Streets restrict motor traffic in the immediate vicinity of a school and reduce the use of private vehicles on the journey to and from school.
They exist to:
- improving road safety for pupils, residents and visitors
- increase walking, cycling and active lifestyles for pupils and their parents and carers
- minimise anti-social behaviour arising from inconsiderate parking and dangerous manoeuvres
- reduce engine idling and pollution in the area, including particulates, which especially impact young people
There are around 800 School Streets in London, which is likely to rise to around 1,000.
How they work
Access to School Streets for non-resident motor traffic is restricted during pick-up and drop-off times. Pedestrians, cyclists and resident vehicles are not restricted.
They are usually enforced by automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras. Unauthorised vehicles that enter the road during operating times will be issued a penalty charge notice (PCN).
There are some circumstances that mean you are exempt from School Street restiction. In these cases, you need to register for a vehicle exemption.
