Habitat creation, river restoration and summer children's activities - 24 June 2021

Summer nature activities for children and young people

Greenspace 360's Countryside Education Ranger Team will be holding free fun activity sessions over the summer months on both weekdays and at the weekend. We would like to invite our younger park users to get involved. Full details can be found on our events page. All activities will be run within Covid guidelines applicable at the time.

Tree works

Greenspace 360, the Council's parks contractor, has completed park-wide stump grinding and moved large felled wood into and on the boundaries of the woodland. Seeding within the woodland belt areas on either side of the M4 and in other areas of the park has taken place.

Habitat creation

Greenspace 360 has continued to install several log piles around the park and installed bird boxes donated by the Friends of Boston Manor. The TCV have held 8 practical conservation task days in the park, including clearing the area around the Air Raid Shelter and creating a dead hedge and brash piles with the materials found. They have also created a bee bank seeded with wildflowers and a loggery by the River. Families have also made bird & bat boxes and Hedgehog homes.

River Restoration

Thames 21 have completed the current funded phase of river restoration works with the installation of wooden flow deflectors and in-channel coir reed beds. We hope to bid for additional funding for more improvement works. If you would like to get involved in the river restoration work please go to www.thames21.org.uk

Lake

The small fish population 45 max (koi, normal carp, and a few goldfish) have been translocated in preparation of de-watering de-silting works.
