We have byelaws relating to Pleasure Grounds, Public Walks and Open Spaces. These are in place to ensure safety in and enjoyment of our parks and open spaces.
Barbecues
We have a permanent ban on barbecues in all our parks. There is clear signage at locations where we have seen barbecues taking place.
This byelaw has been in place since the mid-1970s, so is not in place as a consequence of recent fires.
Grass fires
Grass fires can spread quickly and cause serious damage. Call 999 immediately if you see grass smouldering.
The London Fire Brigade gives the following tips for preventing grass fires:
- Never leave camp fires or barbecues unattended and extinguish them properly after you have finished using them
- Clear away bottles, glasses and any broken glass to avoid them magnifying the sun and starting a fire
- Dispose of cigarettes and matches safely
- Explain to children the dangers of playing with and lighting fires
