Overview
You need to apply for a resident permit to park your vehicle if you live in a controlled parking zone (CPZ).
A permit lasts one year. You can also apply for a four-week temporary resident permit if you either:
- only need a resident permit for a short period
- do not yet have the proof you need to apply for a one-year resident permit
Permit charges
Our charges for one-year permits are based on:
- your vehicle's emissions band
- the number of vehicles in your household
Diesel surcharge
There is a surcharge for resident permits for diesel vehicles. This is because diesel vehicles are worse for the environment than petrol vehicles.
The following table shows our resident permit charges for 2025/26.
| Emissions band | First vehicle | Second vehicle | Third vehicle | Fourth vehicle | Fifth vehicle |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | £60 | £150 | £245 | £335 | £425 |

Change your permit
If you are changing vehicles or moving to another parking zone, you will need to request a change to your permit.
If you are using a courtesy car while your normal vehicle is being serviced, you will need to request free temporary cover for that vehicle.
Cancellation, refunds and replacements
You can contact us to cancel a permit, request a refund on a permit or request a replacement paper permit.
You can claim a refund if three months or more are left until the permit's expiry date. This is calculated based on the period of time left on the permit and is subject to a £20 administration fee.
