Controlled parking zones

Controlled parking zones (CPZs) are roads or sets of roads where parking is controlled for a certain period during the daytime.

The aim of a CPZ is usually to prioritise local parking.

How zones are indicated

Entry boards indicate a CPZ's operational times. These are positioned to face traffic coming into the area. A yellow lined area will be individially signed if it operates at different times to the CPZ.

Residents and their visitors, as well as local businesses, doctors and carers, can apply for a permit to park in a CPZ.

There are often many different types of parking within a CPZ. You should always check the signs to make sure you are allowed to park.

Types of parking

The following types of bay may exist inside a CPZ:

  • resident permit holder bays
  • pay and display or shared use pay and display/permit holder bays (more than one type of parking will be mentioned on the sign)
  • business bays
  • disabled permit bays
  • loading or goods only loading bays (usually located near shops)
  • Zip Car or City Car club bays
  • doctor or dentist bays
  • limited waiting/free bays

Find out if a property is in a CPZ

To find out if an address is within a CPZ, you can use our CPZ map.

Not all properties within a CPZ are eligible for parking permits. For example, they may be subject to a planning condition or legal agreement preventing occupiers from obtaining permits (this tends to apply to new builds). You can contact us to find out more about a specific property:

Look up restrictions inside CPZs

You can identify different types of parking restrictions and other traffic features on streets within CPZs.

Requesting a new CPZ

We sometimes receive requests from residents for a new CPZ to be introduced.

To give this further consideration we always advise residents to gather signatures from local residents on a petition. This demonstrates the level of support for a new CPZ.

For the petition to be considered, a minimum of ten signatures are required. These must be from residents of more than one road. (We do not introduce CPZs on single roads.)
