What is preparing for adulthood (PFA)

Preparing for adulthood (PFA) is the stages that young people go through as they move from being a teenager to becoming an adult.

This can be an exciting time for them as they find new opportunities and have increased independence. A young person with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), may need more help to plan through each stage.

We want all young people with SEND to achieve their goals and have the best outcomes in life. This means that it is important for young people and their families to be involved in making plans for this next stage in life.

Our SEND Participation & Employment Plan sets out a bold ambition for PfA, to ensure young people with SEND can access good work and fulfilling, independent lives.

The plan focuses on building high aspirations, providing the right support at the right time, and creating inclusive pathways into employment through strong partnerships with schools, families, and employers.

Rooted in the borough’s wider vision for a fairer, more inclusive Hounslow, it aims to turn potential into opportunity for every young person with SEND.
