A school waiting list is held in the order of admission criteria, not in date order of when an application is received. This means your child’s position can move down as well as up following the addition of any applications that may have a higher priority.

Waiting lists stay in operation until the end of August, ceasing at the beginning of a new school year.
After an application during an admissions round
Your child’s name will be put on the waiting list of any school which is a higher preference than the school they have been offered after an admissions round for either:
- a primary school place in reception year
- an infant to junior transfer
- a secondary school place in Year 7
This will happen whether or not you decide to make an appeal.
Any lower preference school will no longer be considered.
School waiting lists include children who have moved to the area and were not able to make an on-time application.
If you were unsuccessful in getting a place at any of your preferred schools, you have the option to apply for any school which you did not originally express a preference for. Most schools are already full by this stage, so your child’s name will be added to the waiting list.
Very few children get a place at a school from the waiting list because very few people refuse a place at the school they have been offered.
You should accept a school place offer in the expectation that we cannot offer you one of your preferred schools.
You stay on the waiting list until the end of the school year. We will contact you in August to advise you how to stay on the waiting list in the next school year.
After an in-year application
After an unsuccessful in-year admissions application, you can go on the school's waiting list until the end of the school year.
