Deferred admission
Your child can start school later than the September after their fourth birthday if you wish to defer their entry.
This is because their compulsory education starts the term after they turn five. Depending on when your child was born, they can start reception in either January or April rather than September.
To do this, you apply for a new reception place at the normal time. Once your child has been offered a school place, you need to write to the school's headteacher to arrange the deferred admission.
You might consider starting your child on a part-time basis as an alternative to deferred admission.
School start dates for deferred admissions
Your child's start date for a deferred admission depends on the date of their fifth birthday.

-
Your child's compulsory school age is from the following January.
A school place will be available from the September before this but can be deferred until January.
The school place that your child has been allocated will be held once you have agreed this with the school.

-
Your child's compulsory school age is from the following April.

-
Born between 1 April and 31 August (summer born)
-
Your child's compulsory school age is from the following September. However, this would be in Year 1, not reception.
A school place will be available from the September before this but can be deferred until January or April.
The school place that your child has been allocated will be held once you have agreed this with the school.
Your child must take up the school place that has been allocated within this year group. If you do not take up the place, you will need to apply again and your child will be allocated a place in Year 1, not reception.
If your child is summer born, you might also consider a delayed admission.
