Your rights

The UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) gives you the right to apply for a copy of information about yourself. This is called a subject access request (SAR).

The right of access is one of eight rights the GDPR provides. The full list of rights is:

  • Right to be informed
  • Right of access
  • Right to rectification
  • Right to erasure
  • Right to restrict processing
  • Right to data portability
  • Right to object
  • Rights in relation to automated decision making and profiling

Depending on the lawful basis we rely on for processing your personal data, you may not always be able to exercise these rights.

For example, we have legal obligation to process personal data for:

  • collecting Council Tax
  • paying benefits
  • administrating housing applications
  • exercising our safeguarding obligations

Individual rights requests

As well as making a subject access request, you can make a request to exercise your other data protection rights.

Your request must include:

  • your name 
  • your address
  • a description of the information you want
  • details of the service(s) you are receiving and any other information that could help us find your information
  • a copy of photo identification and proof of your address, for example: 
    • driving licence
    • passport and a recent utility bill or bank statement

If you are making a request on behalf of someone else

You must include either:

  • proof of their permission for you to make the request
  • evidence of either:
    • power of attorney
    • a court order
    • confirmation from a health professional that they are unable to provide consent
