As part of the Council’s wider community funding programme and infrastructure levy, Hounslow Council has awarded over £45,000 to the Mulberry Centre, which will help refurbish their space.
Based on the grounds of West Middlesex Hospital, the Mulberry Centre provides holistic support for anyone affected by cancer through counselling; complementary therapies; wellbeing activities and informative workshops.
The local charity provides support to 10,000 people with cancer every year and the Council has been working closely with Mulberry Centre for a number of years.
The Mulberry Centre’s Chief Executive - Raj Athwal - outlined what the funding would mean for them:
We are deeply grateful for this funding, which is instrumental in supporting the Mulberry Centre Facility Enhancement Project. This generous grant enables us to create a safer, more accessible, and welcoming environment for our clients.
With a significant rise in demand expected with the opening of the new Ambulatory Diagnostic Centre at West Middlesex Hospital, these improvements are vital.
The project ensures we can continue providing high-quality, compassionate support to those affected by cancer, now and in the years to come.
Along with funding for the Mulberry Centre, the Council has also funded the following projects:
- £35,000 to 2nd Bedfont Scout Group to improve the scout hut, to ensure it is energy efficient and can function as a welcoming community space.
- Nearly £18,000 to Refuge to develop a new community garden in the women’s refuge.
- £12,000 to Woodlands Estate Resident Freeholders Association to refurbish the bathrooms and toilets including accessible toilets in the community centre.
The Deputy Leader of Hounslow Council, Councillor Tom Bruce, highlighted the Council’s role in supporting these charities, he said:
We are incredibly proud to support these charities and community groups who provide invaluable support and guidance to so many our residents in need.
Charities such as the Mulberry Centre form the bedrock of our communities and we will continue to work closely with them to deliver for our residents.
Over the past year, Hounslow Council has awarded more than £2.8 million to 190 local community projects. All grants reflect the Council’s pledge to deliver a borough that is greener, cleaner, safer, healthier - ensuring residents have the opportunity to thrive and live in communities where they can flourish.
Councillor Grewal, Cabinet Member for Residents Support, Communities and Equalities at Hounslow Council, highlighted the Council’s steadfast commitment to the voluntary sector, she said:
““Our new four-year Thriving Communities Strategy illustrates our ongoing commitment to support the voluntary sector, and we want to ensure these volunteers, community groups and charities remain woven into the fabric of every day life in Hounslow.”
“The power is in partnerships!”
