National Year of Reading 2026

Children, families and young adults

Dancing Books, movement, stories and fun for little ones

As part of the Year of Reading, families can enjoy Dancing Books, a lively and interactive programme for babies and toddlers aged-under-four and their carers

Delivered by DanceWest, these sessions bring stories to life through creative movement, music and play. Dancing Books supports early literacy, phonics, imagination and storytelling, all while getting little children moving and having fun.

Where and when:

  • Osterley Community Hub and Library, every Tuesday
  • Brentford Community Hub and Library, every Tuesday

The sessions are free to attend, require no booking, and run on a first‑come, first‑served basis. They are designed especially for children under-four and their carers.

Throughout the year, children and families can enjoy a range of reading‑focused activities, including:

  • regular story times in community hub and libraries
  • Lego storytelling workshops in Feltham and Bedfont during school holidays
  • world Book Day activities and the Junior Book Awards, delivered through the School Library Service
  • borough‑wide Design a Bookmark competition, with winning designs printed and shared in Hounslow's community hubs and libraries.

Young Adults

Young people can take part in activities designed to encourage reading for enjoyment and self‑expression, including:

  • Teen Read activities and the Poetry Slam event hosted by our School Libraries Service
  • Young Adult Book Group at Heston Community Hub and Library.
