Parking on the street

Three parking contraventions which don’t require signs

Most parking contraventions are either created by the council’s own traffic orders or government regulation and require signs to make drivers aware. There are however three contraventions which apply in London, are created by primary legislation, and do not require signs (although they are in the Highway Code). They apply to vehicles which are parked:

  • with one or more wheels on or over any part of a road other than the carriageway, and not within a designated parking place (known as ‘footway parking’).

  • so that no part of the vehicle is within 50 cm of the edge of the carriageway and not within a designated parking place (known as ‘double parking’).

  • adjacent to a footway, cycle track or verge which has been lowered (or raised) to meet the level of the carriageway for the purpose of allowing vehicles to enter or leave private property, or to help pedestrian cross the road.
