You can find out what kind of tenancy you have with us in your tenancy agreement.
Probationary (introductory) tenancy
We’ll give you a probationary tenancy when you first become a tenant of Hounslow Council. This is sometimes called an introductory or starter tenancy.
A probationary tenancy lasts for a trial period of 12 months.
Your tenancy agreement has details of your rights and responsibilities. They're very similar to those of secure tenants, but during a probationary tenancy you can’t:
- take in lodgers
- sublet all or part of your home
- make alterations to your property
- exchange your property
- buy your property using the Right to Buy scheme
Lifetime (secure) tenancy
This is also known as a weekly periodic secure tenancy. It is a tenancy with no end date, which means you have the tenancy until it is terminated. This gives you the ability to establish a home for life.
Prior to April 2025, tenants who completed a 12-month probationary tenancy would progress onto a 5-year flexible tenancy. We have now moved away from flexible tenancies, so when you complete a 12-month probationary tenancy, you will progress onto a secure, lifetime tenancy.
