Report fly-tipping or illegal waste dumping

Fly-tipping is the illegal dumping of solid or liquid waste anywhere that is not an authorised landfill site. It could be a single bag of rubbish or larger loads of any type of waste.

This is typically different to littering, which is the act of discarding smaller items of rubbish, for example cans, fast food wrappers or cigarette butts, in a public space.

How to report

Reporting fly-tipping immediately will help us in our fight against this illegal activity. All the information in your report is important and will be treated confidentially.

Important details to record include:

  • location, identified by address or local landmarks
  • description of the rubbish, for example builders rubble or household furniture
  • date and time you discovered the rubbish or saw it being dumped
  • description of any people you saw fly-tipping, for example sex, hair colour, height
  • vehicle details, if you saw one, such as make, model, colour or registration number, and any distinguishing features or signs

Do not approach any individuals engaged in illegal dumping and avoid putting yourself in danger.

Report fly-tipping

After receiving a report, we will visit the scene to establish the quantity of rubbish and if it is our responsibility, and we will remove it. We will also look for evidence, with a view to prosecuting offenders.

Those caught fly-tipping will be fined £1,000. Failure to pay, or persistent or large scale fly-tipping, can result in prosecution and an unlimited fine.
