Educational psychologists
Educational psychologists (EPs) are registered healthcare professionals who work in nurseries, schools, colleges and specialist provisions.
They aim to meet with parents and carers, school staff, and often children and young people to develop an understanding of the child or young person’s needs and work through their concerns.
To access educational psychology support, your child or young person needs to be referred by a professional.
Please note, a parent or carer needs to provide consent before an educational psychologist becomes involved with a child or young person.
Emotionally-based school non-attendance (EBSNA)
Emotionally-based school non-attendance (EBSNA) is a term used to describe the difficulty children and young people experience in attending school due to emotional reasons, such as stress, anxiety or feeling overwhelmed. This can result in prolonged periods of absence from school.
EBSNA is sometimes known by:
- emotionally-based school refusal (EBSR)
- anxiety-related non-attendance (ARNA)
- emotion-based school avoidance (EBSA)
- school refusal
All non-attendance should be met with curiosity, compassion and partnership.
