You must be in some form of education or training up to the age of 18.
There are different options after you turn 16. They are:
- full-time education, such as school or further education college
- part-time education or training if you are employed, self-employed or volunteering full-time (which is defined as 20 hours or more a week)
- an apprenticeship (work-based learning)

Studio schools
Studio schools are designed to give students practical skills in workplace environments as well as a traditional academic and vocational courses of study. They offer specialist vocational courses in Years 10 to 13.

Apprenticeships are an excellent way of gaining qualification and workplace experience for a specific type of career.
You can earn as you learn and gain practical skills that will help you to progress into full employment or further study.
You spend part of your time working towards nationally-recognised vocational qualifications. These include basic skills in everyday English and maths, which all employers value, and technical certificates.
