Renting a garage

Hounslow Housing manage council owned garages across our Council estates. In some areas of the borough, we may have vacant garages which are ready to let,

You can rent a garage from us if you are a:

  • tenant
  • leaseholder
  • private resident of the London Borough of Hounslow.

  • Council Tenants - £18.46
  • Leaseholders - £23.22
  • Private - £27.86

Important information about renting a garage

Garages can only be used for the storage of motorised vehicles and for no other purpose.

Private residents applying for a garage will be asked to:

  • pay one month rent in advance on commencement of the garage and pay monthly in advance by Direct Debit

If you have rent arrears

If you are a council tenant or leaseholder you cannot rent a garage if you have rent or service charge arrears. If your account goes into arrears your garage will be repossessed. You will be able to re-apply for a garage when your arrears are cleared.

Waiting lists

Some areas are very popular and you will be added to a waiting list if there are no garages available. We can add you to more than one list if there is more than one location that is suitable.

What you can use a garage for

You can use a garage to park your vehicle.

However you must not:

  • store flammable materials, gas cylinders, chemicals or perishable items
  • set up a source of ignition or a gas or electricity supply.

Cost of renting a council garage

We review rent charges every financial year, commencing in April.

Rent charges 1 April 2024 to 31 March 2025

  • Council tenants:
    • £19.70 per week
    • £85.36 per month
  • Council leaseholders:
    • £24.78 per week
    • £107.38 per month
  • Private let:
    • £29.74 per week (£24.78 plus £4.96 VAT)
    • £128.87 per month

Not paying your rent for council tenants

We will repossess your garage if you do not pay the rent.

If you are a council tenant and get behind with your rent for your home, we may end your garage agreement, even if you do not owe rent for the garage.

What happens next?

Once we have processed your application and found a garage in a suitable area, we will ask you to come to the office to sign for the garage.

You will need to bring your:

  • driving licence
  • vehicle registration certificate (log book)
  • passport or birth certificate
  • proof of address such as an electricity, gas, water or phone bill or a bank statement from the last three months
  • bank details so that we can set up a direct debit or standing order for rent payments.

We will photocopy your documents and return them to you at the meeting.

If you are a council tenant, we will check if there any rent arrears on your account. You will not be able to rent a garage if you owe us rent or any other money, such as Council Tax.
