A recent report by the Domestic Abuse Commissioner hailed the Council’s pioneering support for children and young people experiencing domestic abuse.
The report, called Victims in their own right? Babies, children and young people’s experience of domestic abuse, highlighted best practice and how Hounslow Council was leading the way in early intervention and prevention. The Council employs five unique Specialist Parent and Child Domestic Abuse Workers to work directly in schools and early years settings to provide holistic, therapeutic support to children and non-abusive parents.
The report also commended the Council’s 11-week Let’s Talk programme, which offers a structured therapeutic service for children, young people and mothers affected by domestic abuse. Programme activities include art, stories, discussion, role play and videos to enable children to express their feelings.
Councillor Raghwinder Siddhu, Cabinet Member for Public Safety, Regulatory Services and Enforcement at Hounslow Council, said:
It comes as no surprise that our domestic abuse provision has been recognised nationally by the Domestic Abuse Commissioner. By embedding staff within schools and early years settings, we are ensuring children suffering horrendous domestic abuse get the right support quicker and earlier.
I would like to thank the dedicated and hard-working staff within the service who make such a life-changing difference to the lives of families experiencing domestic abuse in Hounslow.
Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) remains a top priority for the Council: over the past year, the Council has supported 240 children affected by domestic abuse. The Council’s domestic abuse services are part of the Council’s broader VAWG strategy that aims to offer a coordinated community response with key partners. Back in December 2024, cross-party councillors pledged support for the nationwide White Ribbon campaign and posters of the campaign adorned lampposts across Hounslow. The Leader of the Council, Councillor Shantanu Rajawat, awarded the title of White Ribbon Champion to ten nominated men from Hounslow Council and Lampton Group, who are committed to the message, ‘It Starts With Men' - the Champions will actively engage in conversations to promote safety and equality.
