Today over 20 young people across Hounslow took part in the Youth Takeover day. This exciting and inspiring day gave the borough’s youth a taste of the world of politics.

The day featured interactions with cabinet members and experienced, senior staff from the Council.

From communications to cabinet members young people immersed themselves in the busy everyday life of the Council. Teams including Housing, Community Safety, Health and Wellbeing, equality and diversity, gave valuable insight and perspective as the young people learned what makes Hounslow House tick.

Axle, head of the youth cabinet group: “It was amazing to see how decisions are made and to have a chance to share our ideas!”

Leader of the Council, Cllr Shantanu Rajawat commented: “We were proud to support the next generation of prospective leaders, they bring innovative ideas and perspectives. Their insight, creativity and passion helps us build a better future for everyone in Hounslow”

A range of schools across the borough took part with over 20 young people representing a wide range of voices, giving constructive criticism to society. Throughout the day, young people chaired meetings, shadowed senior officers and presented their ideas to council members.

For us taking over communications, we found the day engaging for the youth and hope everyone involved was not only able to enjoy themselves but also feel accomplished by communicating their goals for change to the council leaders.

The London Borough of Hounslow is committed and ensures that the youth have a say, are heard and actively organised in community events supporting them along the way.
