Exclusive opportunities are now available for young people living in Hounslow who are interested in learning a trade or developing a career in construction.

A training programme is designed for young people aged 16-18 who are not in employment, education or training (NEET), particularly those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), young people who have been in care or those have been involved in the Youth Justice System.

The programme enables participants to gain qualifications and access pathways into a construction career, including apprenticeships. It will run for 12 to 17 weeks, with study and training sessions from Monday to Friday at M.I.T. Skills, a training provider located in Syon Lane.

Participants will have the opportunity to learn:

  • Basic practical trade skills, such as carpentry or plumbing
  • Functional skills in English and maths to support progression towards accredited qualifications, including the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card
  • How construction sites operate, through workshops or site visits offering first-hand experience

Young people can register with Work Hounslow to apply. Families and carers are encouraged to support young people with their applications. The closing date for applications is Friday, 27 March and the course will start on Monday, 30 March.

Construction is one of the fast-growing industries in the borough and across London, with a high demand for skilled and qualified talent.

Work Hounslow has teamed up with developers building in the borough, including Hill, Bouygues UK, Ballymore and others, to deliver another free construction training programme for NEET young people aged 19-24.

Participants will take part in training for six to eight weeks, supporting them to work towards accredited qualifications including the CSCS Green Card, Level 1 Health and Safety and more. Those who successfully complete the training will have the opportunity to take part in work placement and job interviews with developers.

Young people can sign up to attend an insight session on Wednesday, 1 April at 3pm in Classroom 1 at Hounslow Community Hub and Library to find out more about the programme.

Councillor Samia Chaudhary, Cabinet Member for Education, Children, Skills and Employment at Hounslow Council, said:

The prospects of our young people are at our heart of what we do. With the support of our partners and employers, we help young people who are experiencing barriers to access training and employment, providing a clear pathway to work or further study. This construction training also supports employers by building local talent that benefits employment and economic growth across borough. I encourage young people interested in practical, hands-on work to apply.
