The Hogarth Prize, a landmark new national arts award, has been launched today by Hounslow Council in collaboration with Parker Harris, inviting artists and makers from across the UK to submit work for a new exhibition at Hogarth’s House, Chiswick, London.
The prize, the first of its kind to be launched by a London council, will bring some of the nation’s most exciting contemporary creativity to Hogarth’s House. The former home of William Hogarth, world renown artist and satirist, is managed by Hounslow Council and holds the largest display of Hogarth’s work in the UK.
The prize is open to amateur, emerging and established artists, aged 18 and over and from across the UK. The Hogarth Prize welcomes submissions in any medium, provided the work is presented in a wall-hanging format.
With no set theme, the Hogarth Prize encourages a broad range of artistic approaches, united by strong technical skill, original thinking and a contemporary interpretation of Hogarthian values.
A high-profile judging panel will preside over the inaugural year, including Robyn Graham, gallerist and artist, Hero Johnson RP, visual artist, and Steven King, artist and coordinator.
Approximately 80 works will be shortlisted by the selection panel, to be exhibited at Hogarth’s House from Tuesday 28 July to Thursday 6 September.
The winner of the main prize will be announced during the show run, receiving a £3,000 cash prize and a six-week solo show at Hogarth’s House in 2027. Finalists will also be entered into a Visitors' Choice Award, with a prize of £500. This will be awarded in the final week of the show, to the artist whose work receives the most votes from exhibition visitors.
The prize will be professionally administered by Parker Harris, one of the UK’s leading arts agencies. Entry fees will be kept low at £16 for one submission and £24 for two, ensuring accessibility for artists at varying stages of their careers.
Alongside the main award, Hounslow Council is launching a dedicated Schools Exhibition, inviting schools across Hounslow to submit artwork created by pupils. These works, produced on artist postcards, will be exhibited at Hogarth’s House for a month ahead of the art prize finalists’ exhibition.
Cllr Salman Shaheen Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Public Spaces at Hounslow Council, said: “‘My picture is my stage,’ William Hogarth once wrote. Now, in honour of his legacy, of which we are proud custodians through Hogarth’s House, we are giving a stage to artists from across the UK through this new prize.
“It is my hope that the Hogarth Prize will nurture talent nationwide and give artists a major new platform to showcase their work, establishing Hounslow as a place that treasures art and champions creative works.
“We see this prize growing year after year, with the Hogarth Prize standing proudly alongside the Turner Prize and the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition, in years to come.”
The prize supports the aims of Hounslow’s Culture Strategy by celebrating people and place, expanding access to culture, and activating heritage sites as inclusive spaces for learning, creativity and community exchange.
