Hounslow is marking Safer Internet Day on 10 February by encouraging residents of all ages to seek advice and guidance around the potential dangers associated with their everyday lives online.

The awareness day will also see the launch of a new resource offering information and support to people across the borough.

Councillor Samia Chaudhary, Cabinet Member for Education, Children, Skills, and Employment at Hounslow Council, commented:

“Online harm is a priority for Hounslow. We’re adopting a public health approach both in terms of prevention and wider safeguarding. Our new resource is a step forward in the provision of tools to help residents make better decisions in their online lives.”

Hounslow Council's Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care, Public Health and Integration, Councillor Lily Bath, added: “Online safety affects everyone, from the damage to mental health caused by excessive scrolling amongst young people to the financial dangers vulnerable adults may be prone to with sophisticated phishing and scamming in general.”

Education is a vital tool in combating online harm and the new online resource, which will be updated regularly, includes:

  • External links to up-to-date information on online safety
  • Tips for parents and practitioners
  • Tools and available support
