Hounslow Council’s Leader and Deputy Leader are urging residents and businesses to have their say on redevelopment proposals for the Treaty Centre.
They warn the current plans risk missing a once-in-a-generation opportunity to deliver a better, more vibrant Hounslow town centre.
While welcoming the principle of regeneration, the Leader and Deputy Leader have raised concerns that the proposals, as currently designed, place a heavy emphasis on tall, tightly packed buildings and small flats, and may not deliver enough benefits for local people, businesses or the wider town centre.
Key concerns raised include:
- 0% affordable housing.
- Few homes suitable for families or long-term living.
- Limited well-planned space for shops, restaurants and leisure.
- Limited appropriate units for small businesses to grow and develop, despite Hounslow’s strategic location close to Heathrow.
- Tall, closely packed buildings that risk creating dark and overshadowed streets.
Cllr Shantanu Rajawat, Leader of Hounslow Council, said:
This is not just another planning application. It’s a decision that will shape Hounslow town centre for decades, and we don’t want to settle for second best. We have a responsibility to make sure any redevelopment genuinely works for residents, businesses and visitors, which is why we urging as many people as possible to share their views as part of the planning process.
Cllr Tom Bruce, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Assets, Regeneration and Development at Hounslow Council, added:
The Treaty Centre needs regeneration. Everyone agrees on that. But we don’t think the proposal currently on the table is good enough. Zero affordable homes, very few family-sized properties and not enough space for jobs, shops or leisure is not what Hounslow needs. This proposal risks being a wasted opportunity and not creating the vibrant, diverse and welcoming town centre which brings opportunity to all communities. This is what Hounslow deserves.
Residents, businesses and community groups are being encouraged to review the proposals and submit their views through the planning portal, such as saying what they support, what concerns them and / or what they believe could be improved. To comment:
1. Go to the Treaty Centre redevelopment application on the Council’s planning portal. Here you will find information on the proposal.
2. Click ‘Comment on this application’.
The application for the treaty centre will be considered by the Local Planning Authority and the associated Planning Committee, which will consider any application in accordance with its legal duties. Cllr Bruce, who sits on the committee, will recuse himself of any discussions or decisions on the Treaty Centre application.
