Hounslow Council is doubling the number of Extra Care apartments in the borough, beginning with a new 50-unit construction in Nene Gardens, Hanworth.

Extra Care housing allows you to live independently in your own self-contained flat while having access to help with everyday tasks such as washing, dressing, personal care and taking medication.  This type of provision has emerged as a popular, cost-effective alternative to more traditional Adult Social Care services such as residential care, supported living, and domestic care packages.

The new apartments will complement the four existing Extra Care schemes in the borough:  Greenrod Place (Brentford), Bristol Court (Feltham), Park Lodge (Hounslow) and Bridgewater House in Isleworth.

In a joint statement, Hounslow Council's Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care, Public Health and Integration, Councillor Lily Bath and Deputy Leader, Councillor Tom Bruce said:

“This is important, inclusive growth for the borough.  New Extra Care facilities in Hounslow will boost provision from just over 200 units currently to over 400 in the coming years.  There is a growing cohort of residents ready and eligible for schemes that reduce needs from escalating and delay hospital admissions through effective integration between local health and social care.”

Olwyn Inskip, whose husband Joseph is a resident at Greenrod Place, spoke highly of the service:

“When my husband became ill, the on-site team at Greenrod Place acted very swiftly, and organised an ambulance, while keeping me informed so I could get to the hospital quickly.  Extra Care facilities offer exactly that, and it’s a great comfort to know loved ones can rely on such professional support, so quickly, from community social workers to on-site care staff. It’s also a facility where he can maintain his independence and not feel isolated while knowing support is available as and when he needs it.”
