Hounslow Council is launching a borough-wide programme to improve pavements and footways in all 22 wards, starting on Monday 21 July 2025.

The initiative – known as the Pavement Pledge – will deliver 20 separate footway improvement schemes, with the first works beginning on Heston Road, Hounslow.

From now through to early 2026, streets across the borough will see resurfaced pavements, safer walking routes, and in some areas, the use of modular paving to retain local character. The programme involves a £2 million investment aimed at enhancing the safety and accessibility of public spaces throughout the borough. It supports the Council’s recently adopted Walking and Wheeling Action Plan, aiming to give residents safer, more accessible routes and encourage more active travel options.

Each household on streets due for treatment will receive hand-delivered notices in advance. Residents will also have the opportunity to apply for a discounted vehicle crossover, if they apply up to five days before work begins on their road.

Later phases will include streets such as The Ridgeway, Chiswick and Ealing Road, Brentford, with the final scheme due for completion in early 2026 on Kingsley Road, Hounslow.

Councillor Shivraj Grewal, lead member for Infrastructure, Recycling and Transformation at Hounslow Council, said:

We are committed to improving footways right across the borough through the Pavement Pledge and delivering for our residents. By investing in cleaner, safer, and more accessible streets, we’re making it easier for everyone to get around their neighbourhoods – supporting walkability, boosting local character, and helping people feel safer on our streets.

Tim Hurley, service director at Hounslow Highways, said:

Hounslow Highways are pleased to support the Council in delivering an additional 22 footway renewal schemes over the next 9 months as part of the Pavement Pledge initiative. When combined with the annual maintenance programme, that means 82 carriageways and footways will be treated this year ensuring Hounslow will retains its independently recognised status as one of the best high networks for road condition in London.

A short video marking the launch will feature the first works underway on Heston Road.

Further details about the programme, including the streets involved, will be available on the Council’s website later this week.
