Permit Parking Areas

Parking spaces are usually marked out in white and accompanied by adjacent bay signs, however this is not always the case. Occasionally, if the layout of a road supports it, a sign or signs will be placed either at the start of the road, or close to it, advising drivers that it is ‘resident permit holders only past this point’.

These are called ‘Permit Parking Areas’ and were first introduced via special Department for Transport authorisation in 2011 (since 2016 this authorisation is no longer required).

Because not all parking spaces are signed in the traditional manner, you should be on the lookout for Permit Parking Area signage when turning onto a road (tip: this method of signing is always found within a Controlled Parking Zone).
