Keeping safe on dating apps

Dating apps when used appropriately, can be a great way to meet people. However, sometimes this is not the case, and we can start to feel unsafe and vulnerable.

Here are some potential steps to make your dating experiences safer.

Your Profile:

  • Do not use any photographs that indicate where you live or work.
  • Use apps that make users verify their profiles.
  • Only contact users that have verified profiles.
  • Block and report suspicious users.
  • Do not send money or share any financial information with anyone.
  • Do not provide your number unless you feel you are ready to

Before you meet:

  • Arrange a video call before you meet in person.
  • Make sure your phone is charged before you meet.
  • Screenshot their profile before meeting.
  • Arrange to meet in a public setting like a restaurant.
  • Tell a friend where you are and send them your location and have a codeword.
  • You can download a person safety app such as Hollie Guard.

On the date:

  • Don’t disclose everything about yourself that you are not comfortable with.
  • If you go home with a person, update your location with a friend. Do not feel forced to stay.
  • If you take someone to your home inform a friend/family member-ask them to check in with you.  Keep your phone on you. Call 999 if you feel at risk.
  • If something does not feel right, trust your instincts, and end the date.
  • If you feel threatened, you can seek help from venue staff or ‘Ask Angela’ if in a bar/restaurant.
  • If you need assistance go to the nearest open shop, restaurant, bar. If a pharmacy is open, then you can say ‘Ask for ANI.’ (Action needed immediately)
  • Use the codeword with your friends/family.
  • Call 999 if you need urgent help. If you do not want the person to hear you press 55 when the operator has answered.
