Flooding in Hounslow

Drainage and flood improvement works

Thames Water Strategic Partnership

In 2019, Hounslow was awarded the Thames Water Strategic Partnership (TWSP) as part of our successful bid submission in competition with several other London Boroughs.

The TWSP is a five-year programme of works running from 2020-2025 which is aimed at improving surface water management and sewer capacity across the borough using Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS). We are progressing nine schemes across Hounslow, construction of two schemes has been successfully completed at the Green School for Girls and Smallberry Green Primary School.

What are SuDS?

SuDS aim to reduce surface water flooding, improve water quality, and enhance the amenity and biodiversity value of the environment.

Your local SuDS are important because they:

Reduce surface water flooding

  • Climate change increases the risk of flooding by increasing the frequency and intensity of rainfall.
  • SuDS store and gradually release rainwater. This helps to slow the flow of water to the drainage network and local rivers. This reduces the risk of flooding from sewers and rivers.
  • This reduces the risk of flooding from sewers and rivers.

Improve water quality

  • By creating natural filtration systems, SuDS can help to remove pollutants from both the air and dirty water run-off from roads. This helps to reduce local air pollution and contaminants reaching the local rivers.

Enhance biodiversity value of the environment

  • SuDS are planted with wildlife-friendly plants. This helps to increase the biodiversity by attracting pollinators and different local species, while creating spaces for habitat creation.

Improve green spaces

  • The installation of SuDS gives us the opportunity to invest in and improve our green spaces for the benefit of the wider community.

Who is delivering the project?

The SuDS schemes are being delivered by Hounslow Council in partnership with Thames Water and Thames21 are leading on community engagement.

The engagement programme will be centred on explaining what SuDS are, the benefits, and what will be delivered in your local area. Thames 21 will be conducting door knocking in the local area of the scheme followed by open days, residents will also have the opportunity to take part in a survey which will inform on the final design of the SuDS, further information on this can be found below.

Where are they being installed?

Beaversfield Park and Wellington Road North:

  • Engagement to start week commencing 23 October, construction estimated to be March to August 2024.

Renfrew Road:

  • Engagement to take place November with construction beginning shortly afterwards.

Brabazon Road and Burns Way/Shelley Crescent, Thornbury Park:

  • Engagement to take place late November/early December, construction to take place April to July 2024.

How can you get involved?

Surveys will be available during the engagement stage of each scheme. Currently, a survey is available for the next two schemes planned at Beaversfield and Wellington Road North where local residents can vote for their preferred concept design. Further information about the concept designs for each location can be found here:

Complete survey

There are also opportunities for you to participate in walks around the sites, planting, and helping to allow the features to thrive, further information about this will be available soon.

Flood alleviation schemes

A number of projects are in the feasibility stage that aim to reduce the risk of surface water flooding for areas currently at high risk, with funding from the Environment Agency. The aim is to retrofit SuDS features to reduce the risk of flooding and bring wider environmental and amenity benefits to the area.

Schemes are being investigated in Northwest Hounslow, Feltham, Chiswick & Grove Park, and Isleworth & Brentford End.

Hydraulic modelling is being undertaken to determine where opportunities for schemes would be best located.
