Supporting Your Child’s Return to School After the Summer Break

As the summer holiday comes to a close, we are excited to welcome our pupils back to school for the new academic year. We understand that returning after several weeks away can feel like a big adjustment for children and families, so we would like to share some simple tips to help make the transition smoother.

Tips for Parents and Carers

  1. Check the school website: It’s been several weeks since they last attended school so it’s always a good idea to check the school website, to see your child’s start/return date. This will also help to keep you informed of any changes.
  2. Oyster Card: Will you be getting transport to school? It’s important to apply for your Oyster Card in time for your return, or make sure you know where your existing card is and its usable.
  3. Organise school essentials: Check uniforms, shoes, PE kits, and stationery in advance to avoid last-minute stress. Encourage your child to take part in preparing their own school bag.
  4. Plan the journey: Whether walking, cycling, or using public transport, practise the route if needed to build your child’s confidence and independence.
  5. Re-establish routines: Begin adjusting your child’s bedtime and wake-up times a week before school starts. A good sleep routine helps children feel more focused and ready to learn. Setting an alarm will help you get use to the early start.
  6. Talk positively about school: Discuss what your child is looking forward to – seeing friends, learning new things, or joining clubs. Positive conversations can reduce any anxiety.
  7. Encourage healthy habits: A balanced breakfast and regular mealtimes set your child up for the day. Staying active also helps with concentration and mood.
  8. Lunch Time: Discuss and plan for school lunch breaks, children often change their minds, they may go from school dinners to packed lunch. You may need to top up their dinner card or buy lunch essentials in advance.

Tips for Pupils

  1. Get back into a routine: Try going to bed a little earlier each night before school starts and set an alarm to help you get use to an early start.
  2. Plan ahead: Speak to your friends, make arrangements to meet and travel together.
  3. Prepare your things: Pack your bag with everything you’ll need – uniform, equipment, and lunch if you take one.
  4. Check your school website/planner: You will be going into a new year group, which often means a change of form room/teacher or lessons. It’s always good to check in advance to avoid being late. Tools such as a planner, put up where you can see it will help to know what’s needed each day.
  5. Look forward to new opportunities: A new school year brings chances to learn new skills, make new friends, and take part in exciting activities.
  6. Share your worries: If you feel nervous, talk to your parent/carer, or a friend. You are not alone – many pupils feel the same way.

We know that good attendance is key to a successful school experience. Being in school every day ensures your child can make the most of learning opportunities, friendships, and support.
