Shared Lives Schemes

Adults with a learning disability, mental health difficulties or other care and support needs are matched with an approved paid carer. The resident lives with the carer long-term or for shorter periods of respite.

Suitable for:

People who wish to be independent but with help.

Supported Living

A shared living arrangement between two, three or more people with a similar health condition or disability, supported by live-in or visiting support workers.

Suitable for:

People who wish to live independently with others but with additional support.

Sheltered Housing

Individual flats with self-contained, private facilities often with communal areas for regular organised social activities. Homes will have telecare alarms to summon help in an emergency, with visiting or live-in Housing Managers to oversee day-to-day activities and maintenance.

Suitable for:

People who want and are able to maintain their independence, but with assistance on hand should they need it.

Extra Care Housing

Individual flats with self- contained, private facilities often with communal areas for organised social activities. Homes will have telecare alarms to summon help in an emergency, with visiting or live-in Housing Managers to oversee day-to-day activities and maintenance. On-site care workers provide help with personal care, dressing, bathing, and meals according to an agreed support plan. Visiting G.P. and nursing staff. Some Extra Care schemes are mixed facilities catering for all ages and for people with physical disability or learning disability.

People who want and are able to maintain their independence, with regular assistance from care staff.

Care Home with or without dementia care

Residential homes with en-suite bedrooms, communal dining rooms and social areas. Staffed 24/7 by care workers to help with personal care, dressing, bathing, and meals. Visiting G.P. and nursing staff. Many homes have specialist dementia facilities with appropriately trained carers. There will be a regular programme of organised social activities.

Suitable for:

People who cannot live independently, need assistance with day-to-day living tasks, but who do not require regular on-site medical or nursing care.

Nursing Home

All the facilities of a care home but with 24 hour, on-site nursing staff.

Suitable for:

People who cannot live independently, need assistance with day-to-day living tasks and have ongoing medical needs, or who are approaching end of life and need regular nursing care.
