Councillors must follow a code of conduct.
This includes general obligations such as:
- treating others with respect
- promoting equality
- not doing anything that might compromise the impartiality of anyone who works for the council
The code also defines and sets out:
- the interests that a councillor must declare
- guidance on declaring gifts and hospitality received
You can find the full code in part five of our constitution.
Councillors' allowances
We pay an allowance to councillors to support their work as members of the local authority.
Each councillor receives a basic annual allowance and those with particular roles in the authority also receive special responsibility allowances.
Councillors can also claim certain expenses such as the costs of travelling to meetings on official council business.
