Parents and carers
The Youth Justice Service (YJS) recognises that parents and carers play a vital role in supporting children and young people through the justice process.
We work in partnership with families at every stage, whether the child or young person is subject to a statutory court order or a pre-court intervention, to ensure they feel informed, supported and involved.
Our approach includes:
- Clear communication: Ensuring parents and carers fully understand the process, requirements, and expectations of YJS orders and interventions.
- Guidance and support: Offering advice and assistance with any questions or concerns that may arise throughout the young person’s journey.
- Signposting: Connecting families with additional services and community resources that can provide further practical or emotional support.
- Parenting programmes: Providing access to evidence-based programmes such as non-violent resistance (NVR) and surviving your adolescent (SYA) to strengthen parenting skills and promote positive relationships.
- Ongoing engagement: Keeping families updated on appointments, progress, and plans, and ensuring they are actively involved in key decisions affecting their child.
- Empowerment and inclusion: Encouraging parents and carers to take an active role in the young person’s development, fostering shared responsibility and collaboration to achieve positive outcomes.
Through consistent communication and support, we aim to build strong partnerships with families helping them feel confident, valued and equipped to make a lasting difference in their child’s life.
