What is a Business Improvement District (BID)?
A Business Improvement District (BID) is a defined area where businesses come together to invest in projects and services that benefit the local trading environment.
BIDs are funded through a small levy on business ratepayers in the area. The money collected is ring-fenced and spent only on projects and services in that BID area.
Typical BID activities may include:
- Extra cleaning and maintenance of streets and public spaces
- Safety and security measures, such as CCTV or patrols
- Marketing and events to attract visitors and customers
- Environmental improvements, such as lighting and planting
- Business support and promotion
BIDs run for up to five years. To be set up, businesses in the area must vote in favour of the proposal through a formal ballot.
