Disabled people - parking permits - blue badge

Blue badge specimen

The blue badge scheme helps people who are registered blind, or people who have severe walking difficulties, to be parked closer to shops and services they need to access.

Blue badges are issued to individuals, not vehicles, so you can use a blue badge as a driver and as passenger.

2012 Changes to the national blue badge scheme

The government announced a major programme of reforms to the blue badge scheme – the most comprehensive changes to the disabled parking scheme for 40 years.

These reforms came into force on 1 January 2012.

This programme has been developed in consultation with disabled people, local authorities and other stakeholders and focuses on making the scheme more sustainable in the future & includes taking measures to reduce the numbers of drivers who abuse the scheme.

The charge for a blue badge has also increased to £10 in accordance with the reforms and applies only to successful applications. Lost/Stolen blue badges will also be charged at £10.

Blue badge applications can now be made on-line by visiting the direct gov website, available on this page under external links or you can download the application form, available under documents for download.
