Young people graduating from West Thames College for DFN Project SEARCH

DFN Project SEARCH is an internationally recognised work-led supported internship programme for young people with learning disabilities and/or autism, which actively prepares them for the world of work and supports their transition into full time, paid employment.

The class of 2024/2025 undertook ‘work rotations’ at Hounslow Council, Thorpe Park, and London Twickenham Stadium Hotel.

Two students have already found employment, with the cohort aiming to maintain the borough’s proud record of helping 70% of the interns into full-time employment over the last ten years.

The event took place during Learning Disability Week, and Councillor Samia Chaudhary, Cabinet Member for Education, Children, Skills, and Employment at Hounslow Council, commented: “It’s fitting this year’s graduation took place during Learning Disability Week as the continued success of DFN Project SEARCH proves there’s opportunities for young people in our borough regardless of background or any perceived barrier to employment.”

Katrin Lehmann, Assistant Principal at West Thames College added: “We are proud to be a partner of DFN Project SEARCH and are excited about our continued commitment to this wonderful scheme that provides ongoing opportunities for and raises aspirations of SEND pupils in Hounslow.”

Among the attendees were parents, including David Blaikley, father of graduate Harry. He said: “The ceremony was a thrilling culmination of a year of hard work, resilience, and growth. For Harry, it has been a step away from the protection and structure of being a student and getting out there and sampling what it’s like to be in employment with a different set of responsibilities.  It has been a tremendous growth period for him.”
