Published: Tuesday, 30th July 2024
Dave Wetzel was born in 1942 and educated at Southall Technical College, Ealing College and the Henry George School of Social Sciences.
He first became a councillor for Hounslow in 1964, standing as a Labour Candidate in the Hounslow South ward.
The former Councillor was one of the “first generation” of Hounslow Councillors having been elected to the shadow London Borough of Hounslow in 1964 before it became Hounslow Council from 1965. He served until 1968.
Mr Wetzel stood again in a by-election in the early 1980s before finally returning to the Council in May 1986 in the East Bedfont Ward for Labour.
He then won the Hanworth ward in 1990 again for Labour before retiring from the Council in 1994. He served as Leader of the Council between 1987 and 1990.
The Leader of Hounslow Council, Councillor Shantanu Rajawat, said:
I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Dave last week – my thoughts are with his family and friends.
With a career in public service spanning more than forty years, Dave played a role in building the foundations of Hounslow Council when it was created in 1964. He was the embodiment of what public service should be.
The Council will pay tribute to Mr Wetzel at its meeting in September 2024.
To mark the death of the Councillor a black ribbon has been placed around the Hounslow Council flag in main reception at Hounslow House.
