Brown wheelie bin for garden waste

Your brown wheelie bin or re-usable sacks are for garden waste.

You get collections through a garden waste subscription.

We collect garden waste every two weeks on the same day as your other recycling. You can use our online tool to look up your collection day.

If we haven't collected your brown wheelie bin or re-usable sacks, you can report a missed collection.

You can put in:

  • grass cuttings
  • leaves
  • hedge clippings
  • flowers and weeds
  • twigs and small branches
  • fallen fruit (from your garden only)

You can't put in:

  • food (you put this in your green food waste bin)
  • soil
  • compost
  • sand
  • rubble
  • plant pots
  • garden tools
  • animal bedding

What happens to your garden waste

We take garden waste to purpose-built sites, where it is turned into a compost through a process called open windrow composting.

This involves putting the garden waste into long heaps called windrows. It is turned frequently in the presence of oxygen and breaks down naturally over six weeks.

This creates a high-quality compost that is certified to the PAS100 quality standard.
