London Borough of Hounslow Funeral Policy

Hounslow Community Funeral Service

When someone dies it can be a very distressing time for the family/friends arranging the funeral, especially if there are concerns about how a funeral is to be paid for.

Some funeral directors within London Borough of Hounslow offer a low cost funeral service under the Hounslow Community Funeral Service scheme.

If you are concerned about how you are going to pay for a funeral, it is important that you discuss this with your chosen Funeral Director (under the scheme) at the earliest stage, before commencing the arrangements. It is very important to know and understand that once you have entered into a contract with the funeral director you will be responsible for paying their costs.

If you or your partner are receiving certain benefits, such as Universal Credit, Income Support, Income based Jobseekers Allowance, Income related Employment and Support Allowance, Pension Credit, Housing Benefit, Council Tax benefit, Working Tax Credit or Child Tax Credit, you may be entitled to a funeral payment from the DWP Social Fund. For further information about Social Fund payments, including an application form, please go to the Direct Gov website.

It is normally a partner, executor or other family member who would be responsible for making funeral arrangements for a deceased person, and they would also be responsible for the funeral costs.

Financial assistance may be available from the Social Fund for those in receipt of certain benefits.

For advice about receiving financial assistance from the DWP towards funeral costs please see the leaflet for more information.
