Amusement (with prizes)

Under the Gaming Act 1968, a permit is needed for premises that provide amusements with prizes by way of machines.

Auction premises

Any premises used for public auctions must be registered unless the auction is a one-day charity event. In this case, proof of charity status will be required.

Explosives (selling)

Before fireworks can be sold or stored the premises used must be registered with us. Conditions apply as to the amount and way fireworks are stored and sold.

Gaming machines

A gaming permit is needed for amusement with prizes machines; these include fruit machines and ‘one armed bandits’ Hounslow has a policy of NOT issuing permits for machines to be placed in food take away shops, mini cab offices or similar premises. The only permits issued are for amusement arcades. These are issued following a consultation process and are finally decided by our licensing committee.

Lottery

The Lotteries and Amusements Act 1976 (as amended by the National Lottery etc. Act 1993) controls the conduct of small lotteries, raffles etc. A licence is required to conduct small lotteries, raffles etc. by societies raising money for charity, sports and other similar purposes, for non-personal or non-commercial reasons.

Poisons

We are responsible for maintaining a list of people allowed to sell a range of substances which are listed in the various schedules of the Poisons Act 1972. Being included on the list allows the retail sale of substances on the list.

Scrap metal

You are required to apply for a Site or Collectors Licence under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2003. For the purposes of application, a scrap metal dealer is someone who has a store for scrap metal within the borough or, who although they do not have a store are based at an address within the borough.

Sex establishment

Sex establishments are required to be licensed under the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1982.

Special treatment

A Special Treatment Licence is a licence that is issued to premises that carry out or intend to carry out:

  • Massage
  • Manicure/pedicure
  • Acupuncture
  • Tattooing
  • Sauna
  • Threading
  • Cosmetic Piercing
  • Waxing
  • Light/laser
  • Electric (Ultraviolet light or electrolysis and similar)
  • Facials

Sports ground

Under the Safety at Sports Ground Act 1975 a safety certificate is required in respect of football or other sports grounds with a capacity to accommodate over 10,000 spectators

Street café

A licence is required to use a portion of a public street, road or place for the sale of food and drink and for the placing of tables, chairs and other furniture outside a restaurant or cafe for patrons to use whilst consuming food and drink.

Track betting

Track betting licences are issued under the Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Act 1963. A licence is required by anyone carrying on bookmaking on any betting track. The definition of 'track' extends to any premises on which races, of any description, athletic sports or other sporting events take place
