Affordable home ownership options for council tenants

As part of the council’s pledge to build 1,000 new homes, we will support eligible residents to buy their first home. The council’s home ownership service exists to support those who live or work within the borough and want to get on to or move up the property ladder through purchasing or renting a property.

If you cannot afford to buy a home outright on the open market, you may be eligible to buy through one of the low-cost home ownership products we currently have on offer. Low Cost Home Ownership housing is provided in partnership with housing associations working in the borough.

The following home ownership schemes are currently available:

Right to buy

The Right to Buy is a Government scheme which gives secure tenants of councils and some housing associations the legal right to buy, at a large discount, the council property they are living in.

Shared ownership

Eligible residents may be able to purchase a shared ownership property by buying shares between 25% and 75% of the home’s value. Further shares can be purchased in the future as and when shared owners can afford them.

Discount market sale

Discount Market Sale (DMS) is a low-cost home ownership product where a new build property is purchased at a discounted price.
