The Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) ECLOs offer practical and emotional support to blind and partially sighted people, their families and carers.
RNIB have partnered with the Middlesex Association for the Blind (MAB) and Hounslow Council to introduce two community-based Eye Care Liaison Officers (ECLOs) to support residents with a visual impairment in Hounslow. What is an ECLO?
ECLOs work closely with medical and nursing staff and the Sensory Impairment team in Social Services. They provide those recently diagnosed with an eye condition with the practical and emotional support which they need to understand their diagnosis, deal with their sight loss and maintain their independence.
ECLOs also can work with those who have a long-term eye condition too.
As there is no eye clinic in the borough, the Hounslow ECLOs are unique as they help with outreach work supporting people who live in the London Borough of Hounslow. They work by signposting and referring you to services which you may feel will benefit you.
How can an ECLO help you?
ECLOs offer support and can advise you on:
• a range of eye conditions
• finding welfare benefits you may be entitled to
• remaining in employment or re-training
• mental health and emotional wellbeing
• children's services and where to get help with difficulties at school
• finding voluntary organisations and local support groups.
ECLOs are also able to explain the process of becoming registered as blind or partially sighted and the benefits of being registered.Contact details
