Black History Month

Black History Month recognises how British society has been enriched and made stronger thanks to the people who travelled here to build new lives. It also celebrates the achievements and contributions of their descendants.

Throughout October 2020, we are putting on a number of events to support the borough’s BAME community, with a particular focus on supporting BAME residents through challenges which have arisen due to coronavirus.

Many BAME residents in Hounslow work in “at-risk” jobs and earlier this month, a Virtual Employers Fair took place which aimed to support residents into employment, training and transition. The Met Police gave a talk focusing on their general police staff roles, as well as volunteering opportunities and upcoming police constable roles in 2021, while there was a range of talks on topics such as apprenticeships, skills courses and transitioning into new career paths.

Thursday 22 October

Hounslow Council, in partnership with Ealing and Hounslow CVS, will host a half-day webinar which will recognise the remarkable contribution and support offered by the third and faith sector to our communities. The webinar is open to third sector organisations and charities and you can register your interest by emailing
iain@ehcvs.org.uk.

Thursday 29 October

Webinar from 10-11am there will be a webinar chaired by Hounslow Chamber of Commerce where five guest BAME business speakers will provide information on grants, loans and assistance available to small businesses, and share examples of how local businesses have coped during coronavirus. BAME businesses face many issues, such as a language barrier, digital barrier, poor capital and poor knowledge of navigating Government bureaucracy.

This webinar will offer advice to help local enterprises move towards business recovery. If you are a local business and would like to join the webinar, please contact Sally Smith from Hounslow Chamber of Commerce on sallysmith@hounslowchamber.org.uk You do not have to be a member of the Chamber to attend the webinar.

Monday 26 October

An event which celebrates Black History Month with Hounslow’s youth will take place, bringing together Hounslow’s BAME young people with inspirational BAME speakers. This event is specifically open to children in foster care, care leavers and some community groups.
