Published: Tuesday, 2nd July 2019
Government has announced today (2 July 2019) that thousands of bereaved families who lose children through death or stillbirth are to get up to £2,000 of the funeral costs paid for by the Government.
A new funeral fund for England will cover the costs of cremation or burial, which can range from £500 to more than £1,500, as well as £300 for a coffin. The Government will fully fund the estimated £14 million annually to cover the 3,800 children who die under the age of 18 each year and the 2,700 stillbirths.
Leader of Hounslow Council, Cllr Steve Curran said:
“Hounslow has for several years met these costs for our bereaved families. We have recognised how important it is to support bereaved families through such difficult circumstances. We welcome this announcement that this approach will now be universally applied across the country.”
