The Step Up to Social Work programme is a fast track training programme leading to a career as a children's social worker within 14 months. Challenging, yet hugely rewarding, it’s your fast track to making a real difference in people’s lives.

The course will be running from January 2020 to March 2021 and participants will receive a tax free bursary of over £19,000 towards living costs and any child care arrangements. In addition, all course fees are paid.

Step Up is employer-led, delivered by the West London Social Work Partnership on behalf of the Department for Education together with the University of Hertfordshire. At the end of the course, successful candidates will be offered suitable vacancies held by Hounslow Council.

Councillor Tom Bruce, Cabinet Member for Education, Children and Youth Services, Hounslow Council, said: “We are very pleased to be supporting the Step Up to Social Work programme, which offers people a direct route into the world of children's social work.

"I would encourage any talented graduates who have ever thought about a career in children's social work to seriously consider applying for this fast track programme and, who knows, one day they may be working with children, young people and their families in Hounslow."

Nadhim Zahawi, Children and Families Minister, said: “Children’s social care is only as good as the people who deliver it, which is why we are recruiting, developing and retaining the best. I have seen first-hand the incredible work children’s social workers can do.

"Social workers play a powerful role in supporting the most vulnerable children and families, and providing hope and care when they are most in need. We want to attract both recent graduates and those who left education some time ago to apply for training schemes such as Step Up, to help develop the next generation of talented social work professionals.”

The application window will close on Monday 18 March 2019 and successful applicants will start training in January 2020.

Potential applicants need a minimum of a 2:1 honours degree or a 2:2 honours degree plus a higher degree at level 7 or above, and at least 6 months' experience working with vulnerable children, young people and families. Candidates also require English and Maths GCSE qualifications at grade C or above, or equivalent.
