Following the Mayor of London’s call for greater devolution along with an urgent need for wholescale reform of the current council tax and business rates system (7 November 2018), the Leader of Hounslow Council, Cllr Steve Curran, said:

“Hounslow supports Sadiq Khan’s stance that regional and local governments are best placed to tackle issues and ensure that economic growth and new opportunities are more equally shared across society.

“Council tax reform is long overdue – the current system is outdated and not fit for purpose, as well as being unfair to many households.

“The same applies to business rates, where the option to retain what we collect and then allocate based on our knowledge of local need is something that councils have called for on many occasions over the years.

“With only a very small percentage of local tax retained locally, we would echo the Mayor’s call for greater devolution and greater autonomy at a local level so that we can best meet the needs of our residents and businesses”.
