Like many other London boroughs, in Hounslow, we are facing a severe shortage of affordable homes. We currently have 2900 priority households registered on our Housing Waiting Lists in urgent need of a place to live in the borough
Although compared to other London boroughs, Hounslow is relatively more affordable, the high price of property across the Capital is still far beyond the reach of many people most in need of a place to live. In response to this housing shortage, the Mayor of London has set ambitious targets for each borough to provide affordable housing over the next 10 years. In Hounslow our targets is 21,800, which we are doing everything in our power to achieve.
As one of the measures taken to address the housing crisis, the Mayor of London has recently launched a Homes for Londoners Property Portal as a one-stop-shop to help Londoners looking for a genuinely affordable home in London. The first phase offers Londoners an easy to access me through shared ownership.
Visitors to the site can build a profile, search by price range or area, check their eligibility for certain properties, and even book open days. What the portal offers will be further expanded over the coming months.
Like other borough councils, Hounslow will be adding our affordable housing to this new portal, and recommending it to those who are struggling to buy a home here. We hope that this will help families to more easily access a portfolio of properties that meets their needs.
Councillor Lily Bath, Deputy Leader of Hounslow Council with Cabinet responsibility for Housing said:
‘This new portal is a great initiative to help Londoners looking to buy in the Capital. The housing crisis has made both availability and affordability very difficult for many, so anything that helps people in their search is very welcome. We are working very closely with City Hall to help alleviate the current housing crisis and fully support all the measures being introduced by the Mayor of London.’
