Residents young and old have walked, run and cycled over 150,000 miles for Beat the Street across Hounslow and Southall, which is more than 170 times the distance between Land’s End and John O’Groats.
Over the past six weeks, the popular Beat the Street activity challenge, supported by Hounslow Council, saw many people around the borough tapping special Beat Boxes on lampposts to see who could travel the furthest and win prizes.
Overall leaderboard winners were the pupils and staff of St Michael and St Martin RC Primary School, Hounslow, who covered 11,000 miles and were rewarded with £1,000 worth of Decathlon sports vouchers.
Runner-up and third places went to St Mary’s RC School, Isleworth and Hounslow Town School, respectively. Adult Autism Hounslow won the community cash prize of £500.
Almost 30,000 people in Hounslow took part in the community health competition and travelled 106,000 miles. Local schools and community organisations created teams and competed against each other.
Nicola Duggan, headteacher of St Michael and St Martin’s Primary School, Hounslow, said: “We are delighted to have won the Beat the Street Competition.
“Our pupils, parents and staff loved the challenge. It has had a very positive effect on our whole school community, encouraging everyone to get out and about and walk the streets of Hounslow.”
Councillor Corinna Smart, Cabinet Member for Public Health and Leisure, Hounslow Council, said: “Congratulations to each and every person who has taken part in Beat the Street. Especially all our schools and community groups.
“Not only has Beat the Street been fun for all taking part, it has also encouraged more people to get active and by doing this, they have been able to discover parts of the borough they might not have seen before.
“Our commitment is to provide opportunities for our residents of all ages to get active and enjoy healthier lifestyles. Congratulations to all!”
