The new public online database aims to protect people privately renting homes in London and features details of landlords and letting agents who have been successfully prosecuted or have faced civil enforcement action for housing offences.

Hounslow Council has been an active participant in the scheme and has carried out significant work to crack down on landlords and letting agents who are exploiting their tenants.

Last year the council’s housing enforcement team received 560 complaints from residents about unsafe living conditions and unlicensed Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs).

The team improved conditions in 149 rented properties where unsafe and overcrowded conditions were found - 84 of these were HMOs, occupied by 371 separate households.

The team’s efforts led to 19 unsafe dwellings becoming prohibited from being rented. At these properties tenants were found to be at serious risk. Nine landlords were successfully prosecuted and four more landlords have been summonsed and are awaiting trial.

Councillor Katherine Dunne, Cabinet Member for Communities and Workforce, Hounslow Council said:

“We’ve carried out extensive work in Hounslow to protect our residents from unscrupulous landlords and letting agents, working hard to raise standards in the private rented sector.

We have wholeheartedly supported this idea from the start and we are an active participant of the scheme, so we are delighted to see the database go live.”
