If you want to get fit and feel good, sign up to join the GoodGym and help your local community while getting into shape.

GoodGym is a unique idea which promotes fitness, supports communities and reduces social isolation.

GoodGym members stop off on their runs to do physical tasks for community organisations and support isolated older people with one-off jobs they can’t do on their own.

The fun fitness group operates free runs out of Chiswick Town Hall every Wednesday, with members supporting local charities and community groups.

Kirsty, a GoodGym member, said: “If you go to the gym and you run on the treadmill for half an hour, you come back, and you haven’t actually done anything, whereas with GoodGym you’ve done a task and you’ve achieved something and yeah, you feel productive.”

In recent months, the GoodGym Hounslow group have completed many tasks including:

  • Sorting donations for the Friends of Cathja's charity shop
  • Garden clearing for the Watermans Art Centre
  • Preparing an art project by Turnham Green station for Abundance London.

In addition to the weekly group run, some GoodGym runners are also paired with an older person and commit to a weekly social visit and/or help with one-off household tasks.

The GoodGym befriending scheme has been proven to reduce loneliness and improve wellbeing. Barry, one of the older people to benefit from the scheme said: “The introduction of a young fit and healthy person into my life has had a remarkably beneficial effect on my own self-esteem and confidence.”

Councillor Samia Chaudhary, Hounslow Council’s cabinet member for green policy and leisure, said: “The GoodGym is a unique fitness initiative which helps individuals get into shape while doing something wonderful for their community.

“It’s a really worthwhile way to get into shape and can help motivate even the most reluctant of us to get off the sofa and onto the streets. I hope as many residents as possible dust off their running shoes and give this worthy opportunity a go.”

Whatever your fitness levels, everyone is welcome to take part in the GoodGym. Group runs are led by qualified running coaches who help you with your running technique and support you to achieve your fitness goals.

The GoodGym is supported by Hounslow Council. If you’d like to get involved visit the GoodGym website to sign up or find out more information.
